If you follow the book from cover to cover and do all of the exercises, you will have a very good understanding of HTML, XHTML and CSS.

Head First HTML is a superb learning instrument for someone with little or no HTML experience. It makes learning HTML, XHTML and CSS easy and therefore succeeds where many other HTML books fail. It is comprehensive, but not a reference book for experienced HTML developers due to its style and layout. It is perfect for the beginner and is also helpful for more experienced web designers and developers who might need a refresher course.
